Our Bed/Dinette area maximizes the high-roof spaciousness, allows open-door lounging out the rear of the van, and gives us the option to entertain guests with seating and pull-tested seat-belts for four. We can also sit upright in bed to journal, play with our daughter, or have breakfast in-bed! In our design process, we sacrificed the “garage” gear area seen in most platform bed designs in order to enjoy this spacious area.
Our table-top is stored behind the back of the left side of the bench seat in a padded area.
Our custom table-top started as an accent and turned out to be the centerpiece of our design. We worked with San Diego Urban Timber and our builder ADF Sprinters to make our dream a reality. Dan and Jess at SD Urban Timber used locally reclaimed olive wood and colored resin to create a live-edged masterpiece, fully integrated with our design and build.
The left side of the bench holds our 20 gallon water tank. Although we lose bench storage on this side, storing our tank internally avoids the hassle of winterizing during trips to the mountains when temperatures are below freezing. We also designed a custom space for our miniature toilet, the Thetford Porta Potti 260b.
To access the water tank and gear stored inside our benches, the 5-inch memory foam pads pull off in sections. We also included a push-through curtain for quick, easy access.
